Bear Springs Fire Has Little Effect On Jemez Recreation

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

San Antonio Campground

The Bear Springs Fire was started by lightning and reported on Sunday June 3, 2012 at 6:36pm. The fire is located approximately 6 miles NE of Ponderosa and 6 miles SE of Jemez Springs. As of  today (6/7) just over 622 acres had been consumed with 75% containment. Much of the new growth in acreage is because of strategic backburn operations. Some crews have been released today, and demobilization will continue as the fire winds down.  Smoke will continue to be visable for several days as interior fuels burn out.

Forest Road 266 and Paliza Campground, both near Ponderosa have been closed. No other campgrounds or recreation areas within the Santa Fe National Forest, Jemez Ranger District  are affected by this fire. San Antonio, Redondo and Jemez Falls Campground as well as Fenton Lake State Park are all open for camping. Stage I Fire restrictions are in place within all of Santa Fe National Forest.

Lexi Loo and a Nice Rainbow

The Kid’s Pond at the Seven Springs hatchery is a wonderful place to take your kids to experience a successful day fishing. To access this fishery, drive approximately three miles past Fenton Lake on Hwy 126 and turn right onto FR314. After a short distance you will see the parking lot for the Kid’s Pond. There is no charge to park or fish. Fishing is restricted to children eleven years old and younger. There is a nice bathroom facility and the pond is open for fishing daily from 8:00am till 5:00pm. Catching fish at the Kid’s Pond is not a “sure thing” but it’s pretty close. Normal bag limits apply to the kids at the pond…five fish per day. Right now, fishing has been fabulous for Rainbows to 16 inches and the occasional Brown up to 20 inches.
