San Gregorio Stocked

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

San Gregorio Lake, located within the San Pedro Parks wilderness, was stocked on Wednesday June 15th for the first time in two years.

Approximately 8000 catchable sized Rainbows were stocked today. Because the lake is located within the wilderness, access for the hatchery trucks is limited to one stocking per year at most.

The hike to the lake is about a mile and a beautiful experience.

Lakes Fire Revisited

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

This afternoon a small fire broke out at mile marker 30 on Hwy 126 near Fenton Lake. Because this fire started in a previous burn area (Lakes Fire 2002), there was very little fuel to feed the fire. It was contained at an acre or so thanks to the quick and effective response by local agencies.

It is believed that a downed power line was the cause. Heavy winds today in the Jemez.

Fenton Lake

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Fenton Lake might be the place to be this weekend. The NMDGF Seven Springs Hatchery stocked Fenton on June 6th with 2233 Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout. Of this number approximately 233 were hatchery brood fish in the 16-18 inch range.

Don’t forget to check out Amanda’s Boat Rentals at the lake. The boat rental trailer is located at the boat ramp and rental rates are very reasonable.
By the hour……..$25
By the half day….$45
By the day……….$75

Get to the middle of the lake where the big fish roam or just take a leisurely cruise around the lake.

Smoke Alert

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Although there were two small fires in the Jemez this past week, both were contained quickly.

The smoke you may see in the Jemez and throughout central NM is related to a large wildfire in northwestern Arizona, over 400 miles away.

As of 9:00 thursday night the smoke had disappated. Hopefully prevailing winds will continue to keep the Jemez skies clear and blue.

Campground Status

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Jemez Falls Campground will remain closed while authorities finish their investigation into the four acre fire earlier in the week. Redondo Campground, which was closed as a precaution is scheduled to reopen tomorrow (June 2nd).

Forest Road 376 north to San Antonio Hot Springs is scheduled to open tomorrow as well (June 2nd). FR376 has not been maintained for years and is an extremely rough road. There are a lot of deep ruts and large rocks, so a high clearance vehicle is highly recommended.
